Vehicle-class signs: only: part 1: how to read them

This chapter teaches 8 signs from the official manual: Taxis only, Minibuses only, Midi buses only, Buses only, Delivery vehicles only, Goods vehicles only, Construction vehicles only, Vehicles transporting dangerous substances only.

Read the wording and symbol on each sign carefully. They tell you who the sign applies to, where it applies and what you must do, and two signs that look alike can apply to different road users.

Key idea: Check who a sign applies to before deciding what it means for you.

Taxis only — R118

How to read it. This is an "only" sign: it names the one kind of user, taxis, that the road or road section is set aside for. The wording is a command to that user, not a warning.

Where you meet it. At the start of any road or part of a road.

What to do. If you are a taxi driver, you must use this road or this part of the road. The sign tells you that the road or section is set aside for taxis. Look for the sign at the start of the road or section so you know where it begins.

In practice. A driver of a taxi comes to the start of a road section and sees this sign. The section is set aside for taxis, so the driver follows that road or section as the sign commands.

Easily confused. Do not confuse this with the matching "taxis prohibited" sign, which tells taxis not to proceed beyond it. An "only" sign sets the road aside for taxis.
