The K53 learner's licence test: how it works
The test has three sections, and you must reach the pass mark in each one. Here is what each section covers and how to prepare.
The three sections
The learner's licence test for light vehicles is made up of three separate sections. You need to pass every section, so a very good result in one cannot make up for a weak result in another.
| Section | Questions | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| Rules of the road | 28 | 22 |
| Road signs and markings | 28 | 23 |
| Vehicle controls | 8 | 6 |
AceK53 mock exams use the same structure: 64 questions with a 45-minute practice timer, marked by section. Numbers can differ for other vehicle codes, so confirm with your testing centre.
What each section tests
- Rules of the road: right of way, following distance, overtaking, parking and stopping, speed limits and your legal responsibilities. Start with the rules chapters.
- Road signs and markings: recognising signs, road markings and traffic signals and knowing the correct response. See all 104 road signs.
- Vehicle controls: what the controls of your vehicle do and the correct order of operation.
How to prepare
- Take a diagnostic to see which section is weakest.
- Read the chapters for that section and learn the reason behind each rule.
- Practise with practice questions and review every wrong answer.
- Finish with full mock exams and check each section against its pass mark.
