Learner licences, ages and supervision
Separate learner codes from driving-licence codes
What you will learn
- Identify the learner class for your vehicle.
- Explain supervision and motorcycle conditions.
- Distinguish the learner test from the practical driving test.
What a learner licence permits
A learner licence is permission to learn to drive the authorised vehicle class under its conditions. It is not an unrestricted driving licence. The theory test covers rules of the road, signs and markings, and vehicle controls. Passing it does not prove practical driving competence.
The reference learner classes are code 1 for motorcycles, code 2 for light vehicles and code 3 for the permitted light and heavy classes. These are not the same labels as driving-licence codes such as B or C. The app’s car/heavy choices are study profiles, not documents authorising you to drive.
A learner licence is valid for 24 months. Check its actual dates and conditions and keep the authorising document with you when driving.
Key idea: Your document’s class and conditions determine what you may drive.
Minimum ages and supervision
The reference minimum ages are 16 for motorcycle learners, 17 for light-vehicle learners and 18 for heavy-vehicle learners. A motorcycle learner under 18 may ride only a motorcycle of at most 125 cc.
Car and heavy-vehicle learners need direct supervision by someone holding the appropriate driving licence for that vehicle class. For ordinary seated vehicles, the supervisor must be positioned as required to supervise you directly. Where professional-driving rules apply, the supervisor’s professional status must also satisfy the requirement.
A motorcycle learner may not carry a pillion passenger. An adult friend, passenger helmet or short trip does not create an exception. Learn the actual vehicle’s controls with qualified instruction before public-road practice.
Key idea: The correct vehicle class, age and supervision conditions all matter.
Preparing for theory and practical learning
Begin with explanations and examples in each subject, then practise questions about material you have read. Review why an answer is correct rather than memorising its position on a screen. A mock result measures your performance on this app’s original practice deck, not a guarantee of passing the official test.
The practical driving test is separate and assesses real vehicle control and defensive observation. The extracted full K53 book includes practical procedures, but reading them does not replace supervised lessons or testing-centre instructions.
Confirm current application, eyesight, identification, medical and booking requirements with a registered driving licence testing centre. The historical manual contains errors and dated references, so it must not be used as the sole current eligibility guide.
Key idea: Use theory learning to prepare; obtain supervised practical instruction.
A 17-year-old motorcycle learner
A learner under 18 has code 1 and is offered a motorcycle larger than 125 cc.
- Check the learner document and the motorcycle capacity.
- Do not ride the larger motorcycle under the listed under-18 learner condition.
- Use an authorised vehicle and do not carry a pillion passenger.
Quick recap
- Learner licence: 24 months.
- Motorcycle learner: no pillion passenger.
- Under 18 motorcycle learner: at most 125 cc.
- Cars and heavy vehicles need correctly licensed supervision.
Practice questions on learner licences, ages and supervision
1 How long is a learner licence valid?
- 6 months
- 24 months
- 10 years
Show the answer
Answer B: 24 months
The learner test covers road rules, signs and markings, and vehicle controls. A learner licence is valid for 24 months. Learner code 1 is for motorcycles; code 2 is for light vehicles; code 3 covers light and heavy vehicles as permitted. These learner codes are different from driving-licence codes such as B or C. The reference manual states minimum ages of 16 for motorcycle learners, 17 for light vehicles and 18 for heavy vehicles. A motorcycle learner under 18 may only ride a motorcycle of at most 125 cc. Car and heavy-vehicle learners need supervision by someone correctly licensed for the vehicle; motorcycle learners may not carry passengers.
Memory tip: Check your vehicle class and the conditions on your licence.
